The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Ascochyta hyalospora, belonging to the Deuteromycetes class. This pathogen is known for targeting specific host plants within the Chenopodiaceae family. It causes a condition recognized as Ascochyta blight, which manifests through distinct necrotic lesions on leaves and stems.

The primary hosts of this fungus are wild species within the Chenopodium genus, commonly known as goosefoot. While it frequently colonizes wild weeds, it is of interest in agricultural pathology as these plants often serve as a reservoir for infection that could potentially impact related crops such as spinach or sugar beet under favorable conditions.

The symptoms appear as necrotic spots on the foliage. These lesions often exhibit a lighter center where pycnidia—the fungus's reproductive structures—eventually develop as small, dark dots. As the disease progresses, the infected tissue yellows and dries, reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and weakening its overall structure.
