Description
The disease known as clover leaf spot is caused by the fungus Ascochyta necans. It is a specialized necrotrophic pathogen that primarily affects clover species (Trifolium). The fungus disrupts normal plant physiological processes by killing cells in the leaves and stems, leading to necrosis and general yield reduction in forage stands.
The primary host for this pathogen is clover, a critical crop for livestock feed and soil enrichment. Both wild and cultivated species of clover are susceptible, and the disease is frequently observed in dense, high-yielding stands where the microclimate facilitates fungal growth. If left unmanaged, it can severely degrade the quality of the fodder.
Symptoms of Ascochyta necans infection typically manifest as irregular to circular spots on foliage, petioles, and occasionally stems. These spots often develop dark borders and, as the disease progresses, central gray to brown regions where tiny, black, flask-shaped structures called pycnidia appear. Severe infection results in chlorosis, drying, and eventual defoliation of the plant.
The development and dissemination of the pathogen are driven by environmental factors, particularly prolonged periods of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected plant debris left on the field surface, as well as on contaminated seeds. Spores are then disseminated by rain splashes or air currents to new growth in the spring.
Economic damage is substantial, as the disease reduces dry matter intake for livestock and decreases the overall productivity of the clover stands. Essential management practices include:
- Implementing crop rotation to minimize the build-up of fungal inoculum.
- Deep plowing of field residues to promote decay and reduce pathogen survival.
- Sowing high-quality, treated, and disease-free seeds.
- Selecting and breeding cultivars with increased resistance to Ascochyta.
- Applying preventive or systemic fungicides if monitoring detects a rising threat of infection.
