Asellariomycetes is a class of fungi within the subphylum Kickxellomycotina. In agricultural science, these fungi are recognized not as plant pathogens, but as highly specialized symbionts or parasites that inhabit the gut of various arthropods present in agricultural soil environments.
The fungi typically colonize the hindgut of their hosts, attaching via specialized holdfasts to the chitinous cuticle. They do not penetrate plant cells; however, their presence in the soil food web influences the health and reproduction of arthropod populations, which may include agricultural pests or decomposers.
Primary hosts include isopods and various soil-dwelling insects. Their impact on these hosts ranges from commensalism to parasitism, potentially affecting the host's fitness. Because they are gut-dwellers, they do not produce symptoms on leaves, stems, or roots of crops.
