The Aspidotheliaceae is a family of lichen-forming fungi belonging to the order Pyrenulales. It is crucial to clarify that these organisms are not plant diseases in an agricultural context. They do not infect plant tissues or cause necrosis, chlorosis, or wilting. Instead, they exist as epiphytes, settling on the bark of trees or on rock surfaces as a neutral habitat.
The biology of Aspidotheliaceae is characterized by a symbiotic association between a fungal partner and a photobiont (algae). The fungus provides structural support and protection for the algae, while the algae produce nutrients through photosynthesis. They are not phytopathogens and lack the specialized enzymes required to attack and digest living plant cells.
These organisms are typically found in humid, stable environments where air quality is high. They colonize the bark of various tree species. Their distribution is highly dependent on environmental conditions, such as humidity and air purity, which is why they are often studied as bioindicators of ecosystem health rather than as subjects of plant pathology.
The symptoms of their presence appear as small, often circular fruiting bodies known as perithecia, usually embedded in the bark. Unlike plant diseases, there is no sign of host distress, tissue decay, or spread to other healthy organs. The plant remains entirely unaffected by the presence of these lichens, making them harmless from a crop production perspective.
No protective measures or fungicides are necessary to control Aspidotheliaceae as they pose no threat to plant health. Prevention is not required; however, if one wishes to keep tree trunks clean for aesthetic or management reasons, proper orchard maintenance, such as ensuring adequate canopy air circulation and removing dead organic matter, naturally limits their settlement. They are essential parts of biodiversity.
