The Astraeaceae family comprises specific basidiomycete fungi that can occasionally act as pathogens affecting the root systems of various plant species. While primarily considered soil saprotrophs, in agricultural environments, they may colonize living roots, particularly when the plant is under abiotic stress or grown in poorly drained soil.
The disease is characterized as a soil-borne fungal infection. The pathogen, typically associated with the mycelial growth in the rhizosphere, infiltrates the cortical tissues of roots, causing systemic damage that disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients from the growing medium.
The host range includes various woody perennials, landscape plants, and sometimes specific horticultural crops. Young seedlings are particularly vulnerable, as their undeveloped root structures lack the protective barriers necessary to resist infection during the early stages of establishment in infested soil.
Symptoms of the disease are often observed above ground as general decline: stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting during peak transpiration periods. Below ground, the roots may show signs of necrosis, softening, and discoloration, which often distinguishes these infections from pest damage or drought stress.
Conditions favoring the spread of these fungi include high soil moisture levels, poor aeration, and the accumulation of undecomposed organic debris. These factors create an environment conducive to spore germination and mycelial spread, often leading to patchy distribution of the disease across the field.
Effective management strategies include improving soil drainage, practicing crop rotation, and ensuring the removal of infected plant remnants. Preventive measures also involve using chemical or biological fungicides tailored to combat soil-borne basidiomycetes and maintaining soil pH at levels that suppress fungal activity.
