Australian grapevine yellows

Australian grapevine

Description

Australian grapevine yellows (AGY) is a serious phytoplasma-induced disease affecting grapevines worldwide, primarily identified by its characteristic leaf discoloration and systemic decline. This disease belongs to the category of yellows-type disorders, causing significant economic losses in viticulture due to crop failure and the progressive weakening of vines.

The primary host for this pathogen is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The phytoplasmas reside in the phloem tissues, effectively blocking the translocation of essential nutrients and sugars. This physiological disruption leads to a comprehensive collapse of the plant's metabolic functions, resulting in stunted growth and eventually, the death of the infected vine.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse and evolve throughout the season:

  • Foliar symptoms including yellowing or reddening depending on the variety, accompanied by distinct downward rolling of leaves.
  • Severe flower and fruit set abortion, leading to shriveled berries that fail to ripen properly.
  • Failure of canes to mature (lignify), making them highly susceptible to frost damage during the winter.
  • Stunted shoot growth and shortening of internodes.
  • Loss of berry quality and reduced sugar accumulation.

The disease is disseminated by insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers such as Orosius orientalis. These insects acquire the phytoplasma by feeding on infected plants and transmit the pathogen to healthy ones during subsequent feeding bouts. Environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction and migration of these vectors are directly correlated with the incidence of the disease.

Management of Australian grapevine yellows relies heavily on cultural and preventive measures. Key strategies include the use of certified, disease-free planting material and rigorous control of leafhopper populations through strategic pesticide application. Furthermore, early detection and immediate removal of symptomatic vines are crucial to limit the spread of phytoplasmas within the vineyard block.
