Description

Australian grapevine viroid (AGVd) is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Apscaviroid of the family Pospiviroidae. As a viroid, it consists of a small, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule that lacks the protein capsid characteristic of viruses. It specifically infects grapevines (Vitis vinifera), acting as a systemic pathogen that disrupts normal plant physiological processes.

The disease caused by this agent leads to noticeable grapevine degeneration. Symptoms typically include stunted growth, shortened internodes, and various leaf abnormalities such as mottling or mosaic patterns. Over time, these symptoms lead to significant declines in yield, reduced cluster weight, and overall loss of vigor, ultimately affecting the economic sustainability of affected vineyard blocks.

The biology and transmission cycle of the pathogen are primarily driven by vegetative propagation. The viroid is efficiently moved through the distribution of infected scion wood and rootstocks. Within a vineyard, transmission can also occur through natural root grafting between adjacent vines or via soil-borne vectors, specifically nematodes of the genus Xiphinema, which facilitate the spread of the pathogen from infected to healthy plants.

Conditions favoring the spread of the viroid are closely linked to agricultural practices and environmental factors that support vector survival. Warm, moist soils enhance the activity of nematode populations, increasing the likelihood of pathogen transmission. Furthermore, the absence of clean planting material programs in certain regions exacerbates the spread, as infected dormant cuttings can introduce the pathogen into new areas unnoticed.

Control and management strategies focus exclusively on prevention and sanitation, as no curative chemical treatments are currently available. Key measures include:

  • Utilizing certified virus-tested propagation material for new plantings.
  • Implementing rigorous sanitation protocols for pruning tools to prevent mechanical transmission.
  • Regular monitoring and rogueing of symptomatic vines to prevent secondary spread.
  • Managing soil-borne nematode populations through cultural practices or appropriate soil treatments.
