Description
The awl nematode (Dolichodorus spp.) is a significant soil-borne plant pathogen known for causing severe damage to various agricultural crops. These microscopic roundworms act as ectoparasites, utilizing their elongated, awl-like stylet to pierce root tissues. By feeding on the cortical cells of plant roots, they impair the plant's ability to absorb essential water and nutrients from the soil.
This nematode has a wide host range, posing a serious threat to crops such as common bean, sorghum, cacao, cranberries, and corn. The damage is cumulative; as the roots are compromised, the plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to other soil pathogens. In cases of severe infestations, the complete destruction of root tips leads to significant losses in yield and crop quality.
Symptoms often appear as patches of stunted, chlorotic, or wilting plants within a field. Because the damage is below the ground, it is frequently misidentified as drought stress or nutrient deficiency. Upon closer inspection, the roots appear shortened, stubby, or severely necrotic, often lacking the fine root hairs necessary for efficient nutrient uptake. Early diagnosis is critical to preventing the spread of the population across the field.
Environmental conditions play a pivotal role in the proliferation of Dolichodorus spp.. They thrive in moist, sandy to sandy-loam soils, where the pore structure allows for easy migration through the soil moisture film. Warm temperatures also accelerate their reproductive cycle, leading to explosive population growth during the main growing season if the host plants are present.
Management and prevention require an integrated approach. Crop rotation with non-host crops is a foundational strategy to break the nematode's life cycle. Additionally, ensuring proper field sanitation, weed control, and soil management can minimize the impact. In extreme cases, the application of nematicides may be required, although focusing on maintaining soil health and preventing initial colonization remains the most sustainable method.
