This nematode causes extensive damage to root tips and root hairs, leading to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting of the aerial parts of the plant. Common host crops include vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers, celery, as well as various types of lawn grasses and ornamental foliage plants.
The biology of this pest involves living in the soil film around plant roots. It uses a specialized mouthpart, called a stylet, to penetrate root tissues and extract cell contents. The nematode undergoes several larval stages within the soil, continuously seeking out new root systems to feed upon throughout its life cycle.
The development and spread of D. heterocephalus are highly dependent on soil moisture and temperature. It thrives in moist, sandy soils, where its motility is enhanced. It can easily spread through irrigation water, contaminated equipment, or the movement of infested soil between different growing areas.
