Description
Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria. They are not plant pathogens; instead, they serve as natural biological control agents that target the specific bacteria responsible for various plant diseases, such as soft rots, wilts, and leaf spots.
The mode of action involves the attachment of the phage to the specific receptor sites on the surface of the bacterial cell. Once the genetic material is injected, the host bacteria are hijacked to produce more phages, eventually leading to cell lysis, which halts the proliferation of the infection.
Bacteriophages do not infect plant cells. They only attack targeted bacteria like Erwinia amylovora or Xanthomonas species, making them safe for use on food crops. Their narrow host range ensures that they do not harm the beneficial microbial community or the environment.
Environmental factors such as UV light exposure, temperature, and moisture levels influence the survival and efficacy of bacteriophages in the field. Effective application requires precise timing and consistent presence of the pathogen population to maintain the replication cycle of the phages.
In modern agriculture, bacteriophages are gaining recognition as an alternative to copper-based bactericides and antibiotics. Their use helps mitigate the development of bacterial resistance, provides high specificity, and aligns with organic farming practices by reducing chemical residues on agricultural products.
