Description

Barren stalks in corn is a physiological disorder characterized by the failure of the plant to produce a harvestable ear, despite the plant appearing healthy and vegetative robust. This condition is not caused by infectious pathogens like fungi or bacteria, but is a direct response of the corn plant to environmental and nutritional stress factors that inhibit successful pollination and grain development.

This condition primarily affects maize crops during the critical developmental window when the plant transitions from vegetative growth to reproduction. The plant requires a specific balance of resources to support ear development; when these resources are redirected or limited due to stress, the plant often aborts the ear development process as a survival mechanism.

The visual symptoms include well-developed stalks and leaves, but the absence of ears or the presence of small, undeveloped nubbins without kernels. A common underlying issue is the lack of synchronization between pollen shed from the tassel and silk emergence from the ear, known as silking delay, which prevents fertilization.

Development and spread of barren stalks are heavily influenced by high plant population densities, which create intense competition for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Extreme heat, severe drought during the V12–R1 growth stages, and nutrient deficiencies (particularly nitrogen) are the leading environmental triggers for this phenomenon.

The economic impact is significant, as barren plants contribute nothing to the grain yield, leading to substantial field-wide losses. Prevention relies on sound agronomic practices: ensuring optimal plant populations for the hybrid variety, implementing effective soil fertility programs, providing supplemental irrigation where possible, and selecting hybrids with high tolerance to abiotic stress.
