Description

In agronomy, Low fertility refers to a non-infectious condition of the soil characterized by a deficiency of essential nutrients, organic matter, and poor biological activity. While it is not a biotic pathogen, it acts as a primary stressor that prevents crops from reaching their genetic yield potential, often leading to severe physiological disorders that can be misidentified as plant diseases.

The primary diseases caused by low fertility are physiological in nature, manifesting as chlorosis, stunted growth, premature senescence, and necrosis. These conditions affect almost all crops, including cereals, legumes, and horticultural plants. Without sufficient nutrients such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, or micronutrients like Zinc and Boron, plants struggle to synthesize the proteins and enzymes necessary for growth.

The biological aspect of low fertility involves the disruption of the plant's metabolic pathways. Plants growing in nutrient-poor environments become highly susceptible to secondary attacks by opportunistic pathogens. When a plant is weakened by nutritional stress, its mechanical defenses and chemical pathways for resistance are compromised, making it an easy target for fungal or bacterial infections that would otherwise be resisted by a healthy plant.

Development and spread are triggered by intensive monoculture practices, soil erosion, and leaching of nutrients. Once the soil structure is degraded, the cation exchange capacity drops, and the soil loses its ability to supply nutrients efficiently. The condition propagates as the soil organic matter levels decline, leading to a loss of soil structure and reduced microbial diversity.

Damage caused by low fertility is severe, resulting in significant yield losses and low-quality produce. Control measures focus on long-term soil management: regular soil testing, application of organic composts, precise mineral fertilization, and the use of cover crops. By integrating crop rotation and conservation tillage, farmers can restore the biological balance and ensure long-term sustainability of the agricultural land.
