It involves the mechanical rupture of the bulb's basal plate, which compromises the structure of the bulb and creates entry points for various secondary soil-borne pathogens.
The primary crops affected by this condition are bulb onions and garlic. While it is often considered a physiological response to environmental stress, the splitting of the basal plate can be exacerbated by fungal pathogens such as Fusarium species, which colonize the damaged tissue and cause further decay.
Symptoms include visible cracks or vertical splits in the basal plate of the bulb. Above-ground symptoms may manifest as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and premature wilting. In more severe cases, the bulb becomes misshapen, and the interior tissues may show signs of discoloration or secondary rot.
