Description
Bayoud is a devastating vascular wilt disease affecting the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). It is considered the most serious threat to date palm plantations in many regions, capable of causing widespread mortality if left unmanaged within an oasis environment.
The disease is caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis. The pathogen invades the roots of the palm, colonizes the vascular tissues, and produces toxins that disrupt the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients, eventually causing total collapse.
Clinical signs of Bayoud include the sudden whitening or yellowing of the spines on one side of a frond, followed by the death of the entire leaf. Over time, the entire crown dries out, and a distinct browning or reddish discoloration of the vascular bundles becomes visible in the cross-section of the rachis or trunk.
The fungus thrives in various soil types and can persist in the environment for many years. It is spread primarily through infected soil, contaminated irrigation water, and the movement of infested farming equipment, as well as by wind-blown spores or infected offshoots used for propagation.

Because there is no curative treatment for infected palms, management focuses strictly on containment. Prevention is the only viable strategy, requiring regional cooperation to maintain phytosanitary standards and limit the spread of the pathogen to unaffected plantations.
