Description

The disease known as black root rot is caused by the soil-borne fungus Berkeleyomyces rouxiae. This pathogen is a significant threat in agriculture, primarily attacking the roots of various plant species and leading to systemic physiological stress, stunted growth, and potential death of the host plant.

A wide variety of crops are susceptible to this pathogen, including economically important plants such as tobacco, cotton, various vegetable crops (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, beans), and numerous ornamental species like petunias and poinsettias. The pathogen's ability to survive in various environments makes it a persistent challenge for commercial growers.

The primary clinical signs include distinct black, necrotic lesions on the root system. As the fungus colonizes the root tissues, the epidermis turns black due to the formation of chlamydospores. Affected plants often exhibit symptoms of nutrient deficiency, such as chlorosis of the lower leaves, severe wilting during peak sunlight, and a reduced ability to recover from water stress.

Development and dissemination of Berkeleyomyces rouxiae are heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high soil moisture levels. The pathogen produces highly resilient spores (chlamydospores) that can persist in the soil for several years. It is predominantly spread through the movement of contaminated soil, irrigation water, infected transplants, and poorly sanitized agricultural tools.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate disease pressure. Cultural practices are paramount, including the use of certified pathogen-free seeds or transplants and the implementation of long-term crop rotation. Managing the growing environment by optimizing soil pH and ensuring proper drainage is also crucial to reduce the activity of the fungus.
