Important note: Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) is classified in agronomy as a highly invasive perennial weed, not a plant disease. While it is sometimes used as a turf grass, in an agricultural context, it acts as a severe competitor that suppresses crop growth and reduces yield across diverse farming systems.
The biology of Bermuda grass is characterized by its aggressive rhizome and stolon system, which allows it to spread rapidly horizontally and penetrate deep into the soil profile. Its ability to regrow from tiny rhizome segments makes it incredibly difficult to eliminate through simple mechanical tillage or field cultivation.
This weed affects a wide range of agricultural commodities, including corn, soybeans, orchards, and vegetable crops. By forming dense mats, it monopolizes soil moisture and nutrients, effectively starving the cultivated plants and creating a hostile environment for the development of the primary crop's root system.
Bermuda grass thrives under warm, sunny conditions and is highly tolerant of drought and various soil types. It spreads efficiently through fragmented root systems transported by machinery and also via seeds, which can be dispersed by wind, water, or contaminated agricultural equipment during seasonal work.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to suppress its development. This includes the use of systemic herbicides (such as glyphosate or fluazifop-p-butyl), deep plowing to expose rhizomes to desiccation, and the implementation of competitive crop rotations that shade out the weed during its peak growth cycles.
