Description
The family Biatorellaceae consists of lichenized fungi that are commonly found on the bark of woody plants. While they are not classified as plant pathogens or the primary cause of systemic disease, their presence is frequently observed by agronomists during the inspection of older orchards and nurseries where environmental conditions favor epiphyte colonization.
The biological nature of these organisms involves a stable symbiosis between fungi and photosynthetic algae. They do not feed on the plant's sap or penetrate deep into the phloem or xylem layers. Instead, they act as epiphytes, utilizing the tree bark strictly as a physical substrate for anchoring and gathering nutrients from airborne dust and precipitation.
Preferred hosts for Biatorellaceae include mature fruit trees such as apple, pear, and certain nut-bearing species that possess textured or fissured bark. Young trees with smooth, rapidly expanding bark are typically not colonized by these organisms, as the substrate does not offer the necessary stability for the long-term development of the lichen thallus.
Symptomatic signs of their presence appear as small, often immersed apothecia that look like black, pin-head-sized dots on the bark surface. While these might be mistaken for fungal cankers or pycnidia of certain pathogens, their growth is strictly superficial and does not cause tissue necrosis or wilting of branches.
Environmental conditions supporting their distribution include high ambient humidity, shade, and low levels of atmospheric pollutants. In a horticultural context, the main concern is that excessive lichen growth may trap moisture and create niches for overwintering pests such as scale insects or mites. Therefore, common protection measures include mechanical scrubbing of the bark and the application of copper-based sprays during the dormant season to maintain healthy, clean trunk surfaces.
