Bipolaris is a genus of fungi causing various leaf spot and blighting diseases on many agricultural crops. It is particularly notorious for its impact on small grains such as wheat, barley, and sorghum, as well as corn. The pathogen is highly adaptable and can survive in various environmental conditions, making it a persistent challenge for farmers worldwide.
The primary symptom of the disease is the development of necrotic, oval or elongated spots on leaves, stems, and heads. These lesions are typically brown or dark in color, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Under high humidity conditions, the centers of these spots exhibit a velvety, dark olive-black mass of spores, which is diagnostic for the infection.
The development of the disease is favored by warm temperatures and periods of high leaf wetness or humidity. The fungus primarily overwinters as mycelium or spores on crop residues, infested soil, and seeds. Spores are easily disseminated by wind and rain splashes, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly through fields when environmental conditions become conducive to fungal reproduction.
The economic impact of Bipolaris infections is significant due to the loss of photosynthetic tissue, which directly results in reduced plant vigor and premature senescence. In severe cases, the disease affects the grain filling period, resulting in shriveled kernels, lower test weights, and substantial yield losses. Furthermore, contaminated seed lots may lead to poor germination and seedling blight in the following season.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach including:
