Bitter rot

Description

Bitter rot is a destructive plant disease primarily caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum orbiculare. In the context of horticulture, it is commonly referred to as anthracnose. This disease poses a significant threat to various cucurbit crops, with watermelons being particularly susceptible, often resulting in severe harvest losses.

The primary symptom of bitter rot is the development of sunken, dark-colored lesions on the skin of the fruit. In humid conditions, these lesions become covered with pinkish, gelatinous masses of fungal spores. As the infection penetrates deeper into the tissue, it ruins the flesh's texture and imparts a distinctively bitter taste, rendering the fruit unmarketable.

Disease development is highly favored by warm temperatures and high relative humidity. The pathogen thrives in environments where moisture remains on the foliage and fruit surfaces for extended periods, such as after rainfall or heavy dew. Spread occurs via wind, splashing water from irrigation, and mechanical contact during harvest and handling.

The economic impact is profound, as the disease can affect fruits at any stage of development. Post-harvest losses are especially critical, as infected produce can rapidly rot in storage. The bitterness caused by the fungal toxins makes the product completely unacceptable to consumers, leading to significant financial burden for growers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include crop rotation with non-cucurbit species to break the pathogen's life cycle, the selection of resistant cultivars, and the removal of infected debris after the growing season. Proactive fungicide applications are crucial during periods of wet weather to suppress fungal growth.

  • Use of disease-free, treated seeds
  • Proper field drainage to reduce humidity
  • Cleaning of all cultivation tools
  • Application of fungicides at early signs of infection
