Description

Black dot disease is a fungal condition caused by Epicoccum species, most notably Epicoccum nigrum. While historically regarded as a secondary colonizer or saprophyte, research indicates that under stressful environmental conditions, it acts as a primary pathogen, compromising plant health and quality.

This pathogen has a broad host range and can infect various agronomic and horticultural crops. It is notably observed affecting hemp (Cannabis sativa), where it impacts leaf integrity and overall plant vigor. The fungus tends to invade stressed tissue, making it a critical concern in high-humidity cultivation environments.

The primary symptom is the appearance of distinct black, pinpoint-sized spots on the foliage, stems, or fruits. These spots are often surrounded by chlorotic zones. In high humidity, the lesions may develop a characteristic fluffy or powdery sporulation mass, which can range in color from orange to brown, providing a visual clue for diagnosis.

Environmental conditions are key to disease outbreaks. High relative humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures create an ideal microclimate for the germination and spread of spores. Crowded plant densities often exacerbate the problem by trapping moisture and preventing the drying of the plant canopy.

Management focuses on reducing inoculum through strict sanitation and cultural practices. This includes removing crop debris, implementing proper crop rotation, and ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow. In commercial settings, timely application of fungicides may be necessary if environmental conditions favor disease pressure.
