Epicoccum nigrum is a ubiquitous fungal species belonging to the division Ascomycota. While commonly identified as a saprophyte that decomposes organic matter, it is frequently recognized in agronomy as an opportunistic phytopathogen. Under specific environmental conditions, it colonizes various living plants, causing tissue damage and compromising crop quality.

The fungus is responsible for various plant disorders, including leaf spots, fruit rot, and blights. Economically important crops such as wheat, barley, tomatoes, and various legumes are susceptible to infection. The pathogen is often identified by the formation of dark-colored sporodochia on the surfaces of affected plant tissues, which release large numbers of spores.

The biological cycle of Epicoccum nigrum involves rapid vegetative growth followed by prolific asexual reproduction. The pathogen relies on air currents and water splashes to disseminate its conidia. It survives during non-growing seasons as mycelium or chlamydospores in soil and on debris, making it a persistent presence in many agricultural environments.

Development and disease spread are heavily influenced by humidity and temperature. Warm conditions (ranging from 20°C to 28°C) combined with prolonged moisture or high humidity are ideal for infection. The pathogen often exploits weakened or stressed plant tissues, causing secondary infections that accelerate decay and significantly reduce the marketability of fruits and grains.

Management of Epicoccum nigrum requires an integrated approach to maintain crop health and reduce inoculum levels. Key control measures include:

  • Effective crop rotation practices to break the infection cycle.
  • Sanitation measures, including the removal or deep incorporation of infected crop residues.
  • Seed treatment with appropriate systemic fungicides to prevent early-stage infection.
  • Timely application of foliar fungicides during periods of high humidity if symptoms of disease appear.
