Description
Blasiphalia pseudogrisella, commonly referred to as the lesser wax moth, is a destructive pest of stored honeycombs and weak beehives. While often classified among agricultural pests, its primary impact is focused on the apiculture sector, where it causes degradation of hive resources and loss of precious wax foundations.
The pest primarily targets combs that are outside the cluster of bees or within hives that have become weakened due to disease or queen issues. The larvae tunnel through the wax, consuming not only the wax itself but also pollen and brood remains left behind in the cells. This destructive behavior eventually turns functional combs into a mass of webbed debris.
Symptoms of infestation include the presence of silk webbing across frames, visible tunnels bored through the wax walls, and granular excrement left by the larvae. Adult moths are relatively small, grayish insects that are active at night and seek out gaps in hives or storage facilities to lay their eggs, ensuring the cycle continues.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the lesser wax moth. High temperatures and lack of ventilation in storage areas are primary catalysts for rapid reproduction. Once a population establishes itself in a storage room with wax supplies, it can cause severe damage within a very short timeframe if left untreated.
Effective management strategies center on keeping colonies robust, as strong hives naturally resist infestation. For stored comb, mechanical protection such as freezing temperatures or using airtight storage units is highly recommended. Biological control measures, specifically the application of Bacillus thuringiensis, are widely recognized as safe and effective ways to prevent larvae from surviving on the wax.
