Blind pocket

Blind pocket is a viral disease affecting citrus trees, characterized by distinct depressions and deformations in the trunk and branches. The pathogen is transmitted primarily through vegetative propagation, including grafting and budding with infected scion wood, as well as mechanical tools used during maintenance.

This condition predominantly impacts species within the Citrus genus. While some trees show no immediate signs, they remain chronic carriers of the virus, serving as a reservoir for infection in plantations and nurseries if strict quarantine measures are not enforced.

The characteristic symptoms include shallow, elongated depressions or "pockets" in the wood, often visible on the trunk. In advanced stages, the bark above these areas may appear flattened or slightly depressed, and the underlying wood tissues show abnormal, woody growths that interfere with normal structural integrity.

Disease progression is highly dependent on the host tree's genetic susceptibility and environmental stress factors. While the virus itself initiates the process, physiological stress from drought, extreme temperature fluctuations, or poor nutritional status can exacerbate the appearance of these bark deformities.

The economic impact is significant due to the reduction in tree vigor and fruit-bearing capacity. Because there is no chemical cure for viral infections in trees, prevention is the only reliable way to protect citrus orchards from declining productivity caused by the Blind pocket pathogen.

• Always source budwood from certified virus-free indexing programs.
• Sterilize all grafting and pruning tools between trees using 10% bleach or alcohol.
• Regularly inspect trunks for any sign of irregular bark pitting.
• Promptly remove and dispose of trees exhibiting classic symptoms to prevent spread.
