Description

Banana blood disease is a devastating bacterial infection caused by the pathogen Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis. Known historically as a Pseudomonas species, this bacterium causes systemic wilting and internal tissue necrosis, making it one of the most feared threats to banana production worldwide.

The disease primarily affects Banana plants. The bacteria colonize the xylem vessels, disrupting the vascular system and preventing the transport of water and nutrients. The infection is systemic, meaning it affects the entire plant structure, including the rhizomes, pseudostems, leaves, and the inflorescence.

Key symptoms include yellowing and wilting of the leaves, followed by the browning of the vascular strands in the pseudostem. The most diagnostic feature is the presence of reddish-brown, blood-like bacterial ooze in the fruit pulp, which renders the banana completely inedible and often causes the fruit to rot prematurely while still on the plant.

The pathogen is spread efficiently by pollinating insects visiting infected inflorescences. Human activity also contributes significantly to its spread through the use of contaminated machetes and other cutting tools during pruning. Once introduced to a plantation, the disease can spread rapidly, especially in tropical climates with high rainfall and humidity.
