Description
Pseudomonas is a genus of Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that includes several significant phytopathogens. Taxonomically, they belong to the kingdom Bacteria, phylum Pseudomonadota, and class Gammaproteobacteria. These pathogens are widely studied in agronomy due to their aggressive nature and the ability to infect a vast array of economically important crops worldwide.
These bacteria are responsible for various plant diseases, including bacterial leaf spots, blights, wilts, and soft rots. Common host plants include tomatoes, cucumbers, stone fruits, and ornamental species. By producing specialized virulence factors, such as phytotoxins and plant cell wall-degrading enzymes, Pseudomonas species disrupt physiological processes, leading to significant chlorosis and tissue necrosis.
The biology of these pathogens is centered on motility and rapid colonization. Equipped with polar flagella, these bacteria move through water films to reach entry points like stomata, hydathodes, or microscopic wounds on the plant surface. Once inside the apoplast, they multiply rapidly, establishing a systemic or localized infection that eventually leads to the collapse of host tissues.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are primary drivers of pathogen spread. Pseudomonas can persist in crop residues, soil, and on seeds for extended periods. Furthermore, their capacity to form biofilms provides them with protection against desiccation and chemical exposure, making them particularly difficult to manage in open-field conditions.
Controlling Pseudomonas infections requires an integrated disease management (IDM) approach. Key strategies for minimizing crop damage include:
- Use of certified pathogen-free seeds and planting material.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host species.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected debris.
- Application of copper-based bactericides at the onset of favorable weather for disease.
