Apple scab is a severe fungal disease caused by Venturia inaequalis, which is the correct scientific classification for the pathogen previously associated with various misnomers like Boletus venturii. This disease is a primary concern for apple growers worldwide, as it affects the aesthetic and commercial value of the harvest, while severely weakening the tree's vitality.
The fungus attacks all green parts of the apple tree, including leaves, blossoms, fruits, and young stems. High susceptibility is observed in young growth and non-resistant apple varieties. Without proper management, the repeated loss of photosynthetic surface area due to early leaf fall can lead to reduced winter hardiness and eventual tree decline.
The first symptoms appear as olive-green to brown spots on leaves, often accompanied by a velvety mass of spores. As the infection progresses on fruit, it manifests as dark, corky lesions that cause the apple to crack and deform. These physical injuries create entry points for secondary pathogens like rot, rendering the harvest unsellable.
Environmental conditions are crucial for the development of apple scab. The disease flourishes during cool, wet spring weather, as the spores require leaf wetness to germinate and infect host tissue. The pathogen overwinters in infected leaf litter on the orchard floor, which serves as the primary reservoir for infections in the upcoming spring season.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective scab control. This involves sanitizing the orchard by removing infected leaf debris, pruning trees to improve canopy ventilation, and applying strategic fungicide sprays based on the tree's growth stages. Selecting resistant or immune cultivars is the most effective long-term strategy for minimizing disease impact.
