It is important to clarify that Bombyx mori, commonly known as the silkworm, is not a plant disease but an insect species. While it is a beneficial organism in the sericulture industry, it can behave as a pest if it escapes into open mulberry plantations, where its voracious appetite for leaves poses a serious threat to the trees' health.

The primary host plant for Bombyx mori larvae is the mulberry tree (Morus). In a natural or uncontrolled environment, the larvae feed on the foliage to such an extent that they can completely defoliate large trees. This stripping of leaves hinders the plant's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, leading to significant stress and reduced fruit production.

The symptoms of an infestation are distinctly mechanical: the gradual disappearance of leaf blades, leaving only the veins and petioles behind. Unlike a bacterial or fungal disease, there are no characteristic spots, chlorosis, or wilting patterns associated with pathogens. The damage is purely physical, resulting in bare branches and a stunted overall appearance of the tree.

The development of the silkworm is highly dependent on environmental conditions, thriving in temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius with high humidity. Outbreaks usually occur when insects escape from indoor rearing facilities into nearby mulberry orchards. Because the larvae are prolific feeders, a colony can rapidly deplete the leaf cover of several trees within a few days.

Protection and prevention strategies focus on strict containment of rearing facilities to prevent the accidental release of larvae into agricultural fields. Due to the sensitivity of the foliage and its potential use, chemical insecticides are generally avoided. Recommended control methods include:

  • Regular monitoring of mulberry plantations near sericulture sites.
  • Manual removal and destruction of egg clusters and larvae.
  • The use of biological control agents, such as specific bacterial strains targeting lepidopteran larvae.
  • Maintaining strict quarantine protocols in areas dedicated to silk production.
