Botrytis blight, commonly referred to as gray mold, is a destructive fungal disease caused by the pathogen Botrytis cinerea, which belongs to the order Botrydiales. This ubiquitous necrotrophic fungus is responsible for significant economic losses in global agriculture, affecting both horticultural and ornamental crops in greenhouses and open fields.
The host range of this pathogen is incredibly vast, encompassing hundreds of plant species. Notable agricultural crops susceptible to Botrytis blight include strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, grapes, onions, and various greenhouse flowers. It can attack any part of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and especially ripening fruits, making it a major challenge for post-harvest quality.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of necrotic, water-soaked lesions that eventually become covered in a dense, fuzzy, gray mass of conidia. Under high humidity conditions, the infected tissue turns soft and slimy, leading to tissue collapse. This rapid degradation is a classic sign of the fungus's aggressive invasion of plant cell walls.
Disease development is heavily favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high relative humidity. In greenhouse environments, poor air circulation, overcrowding of plants, and water droplets on foliage serve as ideal catalysts for infection. The pathogen survives between growing seasons as sclerotia in the soil or as dormant mycelium on plant debris, allowing for persistent infection cycles.
Management of Botrytis blight requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include reducing ambient humidity, improving ventilation, implementing proper sanitation by removing infected plant material, and applying fungicides. Rotation of fungicide classes is essential to prevent the development of resistant strains of the fungus, which is a known phenomenon for this pathogen.
