Brown blotch

Brown blotch, caused by the fungus Pestalotiopsis leprogena, is a notable plant disease that primarily impacts banana production. It is classified as a fungal pathogen that affects both the foliage and the fruit, leading to significant economic losses in commercial cultivation.

The disease exclusively targets banana plants (Musa spp.). While the infection often starts on the leaves, the most critical damage occurs on the fruit, where the development of necrotic spots renders the produce unsuitable for high-quality export markets.

The characteristic signs of infection are the appearance of small, brown, water-soaked spots on the banana peel. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, darken, and develop acervuli — small fruiting bodies that emerge from the host tissue, releasing mass amounts of spores to spread the disease.

The environmental conditions that facilitate the proliferation of Pestalotiopsis leprogena include persistent high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm tropical temperatures. These conditions create an ideal microclimate on the plant surface, allowing the spores to germinate and penetrate the epidermis effectively.

Effective management and control strategies are essential for maintaining yield quality. These include:

• Rigorous pruning of affected leaves to reduce inoculum pressure.
• Improving air circulation within the plantation canopy to lower humidity levels.
