The Bulgariaceae family represents a group of ascomycete fungi that can act as pathogens causing decay in woody plants. In the field of plant pathology, they are categorized as organisms that target the bark and inner tissues, contributing to tree decline in various forest and landscape environments.

The type of disease associated with these fungi is primarily bark necrosis and wood decay. Acting as necrotrophs, these fungi colonize weakened tissue by secreting enzymes that break down the plant's structural polymers. The infection process is often facilitated by pre-existing injuries or environmental stress that compromises the plant's natural defense systems.

Susceptible crops include various broad-leaved trees, particularly those in habitats with high moisture levels or poor ventilation. The presence of dense foliage or a lack of proper canopy management can create microclimates that are ideal for the rapid development and spread of Bulgariaceae spores.

Typical symptoms involve the appearance of gelatinous, often dark or black, cup-shaped fruiting bodies erupting through the bark surface. As the infection progresses, the bark in the affected areas becomes brittle and starts to peel or crack, exposing the wood to further decay and increasing the risk of structural failure of the branches.
