Description
Bunyaviruses (specifically the Tospovirus genus within the Bunyaviridae family) are significant plant pathogens that cause devastating systemic diseases worldwide. As RNA-based viruses, they are characterized by rapid evolution, making them a persistent threat to both open-field and greenhouse agriculture.
The host range of these viruses is extensive, encompassing a wide variety of economically important species. Major crops such as tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and various leafy greens, along with numerous ornamental flowers, are particularly susceptible to infection during their active growth phases.
Symptoms of infection are diverse and often visually striking, including chlorotic spots, necrotic ringspots on foliage, stunted growth, and fruit deformities. These visual markers often correlate with internal tissue necrosis, ultimately leading to severe yield losses and degraded marketability of the harvested produce.
The transmission mechanism is primarily biological, mediated by specific insect vectors, most notably thrips. The virus is acquired by thrip larvae and persists through their metamorphosis, allowing adults to efficiently transmit the pathogen throughout the growing season within a crop canopy.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Primary prevention involves the use of certified virus-free transplants and the implementation of strict sanitation practices. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) focusing on thrip control, the use of reflective mulches, and maintaining weed-free buffers are essential to minimize disease outbreaks.
