Byssocorticium is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Corticiales. In professional agronomy and forestry, these fungi are identified as wood-decay pathogens that can impact the structural integrity of woody plants. They typically manifest as thin, crust-like fruiting bodies that spread across the surface of bark or decaying wood, effectively breaking down lignified tissues.
The host range primarily includes various coniferous and deciduous tree species. While these fungi are common in natural forest ecosystems, they can become problematic in nurseries and plantation settings when environmental stressors weaken the trees. In such cases, the fungus targets weakened stems, causing significant stress to the plant's vascular system and limiting nutrient transport.
Diagnostic symptoms of a Byssocorticium infection involve the appearance of whitish to yellowish crusts on the bark surface. These growths often have a cobweb-like texture when young. As the infection progresses, the underlying wood may begin to soften, and the bark can lose its protective barrier, leading to necrotic spots and the eventual decay of the affected plant section.
Development and spread are highly dependent on high moisture levels and stagnant air conditions. Fungal spores are disseminated by air currents and contact with infected woody debris. Environments characterized by dense planting, lack of sunlight, and high humidity provide the ideal conditions for the fungus to establish itself and spread rapidly between adjacent hosts.
Preventative and control measures are essential for maintaining plant health and preventing outbreaks:
- Regular sanitation of the planting area to remove infected wood and stumps.
- Improving air circulation through proper spacing and routine pruning of canopy branches.
- Applying fungicides to wounds on trees to prevent the colonization by wood-decay fungi.
- Monitoring the health of the bark and implementing rapid removal of symptomatic trees to curb infection spread.
