Byssomerulius is a genus of fungi within the Phanerochaetaceae family, commonly recognized as agents of white rot. In an agronomic context, these organisms function primarily as wood-decaying fungi. While often found on dead or decomposing organic matter, they can behave as opportunistic pathogens, affecting trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or physical damage.

The fungus targets a variety of both deciduous and coniferous trees, including fruit-bearing orchards. Infection typically begins when fungal spores enter through wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks in the bark. Once the mycelium establishes itself within the woody tissue, it begins to break down lignin and cellulose, which are essential for the structural integrity of the plant.

Symptoms of an infection include a distinct softening of the wood, which takes on a bleached or white, fibrous appearance. This includes immediate treatment of pruning wounds with protective fungicides or sealants, clearing fallen wood debris from the orchard floor, and ensuring tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization programs to minimize plant susceptibility.
