Byssothecium is a genus of ascomycetous fungi responsible for causing specific foliage diseases in various plants, most notably within the legume family. The disease is characterized by the development of leaf spots and necroses, which can significantly affect the photosynthetic capacity and overall health of the host plants. As a pathogen, it utilizes both sexual and asexual modes of reproduction to ensure its survival.

The primary agricultural host for this pathogen is alfalfa (lucerne). The disease impacts the leaves and stems, leading to defoliation and a reduction in the quality of forage. When the infection is severe, it can weaken the plant stands, making them more susceptible to winter injury and other environmental stressors, ultimately resulting in reduced biomass production.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, discrete spots on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots may coalesce into larger irregular lesions, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. The fungus overwinters in plant debris, and during the growing season, spores are dispersed through wind currents and water splashes. Dense crop canopies, which restrict airflow, create microclimates that are highly conducive to the rapid spread of the pathogen.
