Cadang-cadang

Cadang-cadang is a lethal disease affecting coconut palms, primarily localized in the Philippines and surrounding islands. The term, derived from the local language, literally translates to "death," reflecting the devastating impact the disease has on coconut yields and the sustainability of palm plantations across the region.

The causal agent of the disease is the Coconut cadang-cadang viroid (CCCVd). Unlike viruses, this viroid lacks a protein coat and consists solely of a small, infectious, circular RNA molecule. It is considered one of the most serious plant pathogens in the tropics due to its high infectivity and ability to survive in various palm hosts, including the oil palm.

The progression of the disease is marked by several distinct stages. Initially, yellow spots appear on the fronds, later developing into a characteristic bronze or yellowing pattern. Over time, the production of nuts declines significantly, with the coconuts becoming small, rounded, and eventually disappearing entirely. The death of the palm usually occurs within a decade from the first appearance of symptoms.

The transmission dynamics of Cadang-cadang are complex. It is largely believed that the viroid spreads through mechanical contact, such as shared tools during harvesting or pruning, which carry infected sap to healthy plants. There is also strong evidence regarding seed and pollen transmission, which poses a significant threat to the international trade of palm genetic material and nurseries.

Effective management of Cadang-cadang relies almost exclusively on quarantine and sanitation protocols. Since no chemical control or cure exists, farmers must adhere to a "cull and destroy" policy to limit the spread of the viroid. Research is currently focused on identifying molecular markers for resistance to develop resistant coconut varieties, which is the only long-term solution for affected tropical economies.
