Description
Coconut cadang-cadang is a severe and often fatal disease caused by the Coconut cadang-cadang viroid (CCCVd). It belongs to the genus Cocadviroid within the family Pospiviroidae. Unlike viruses, this viroid is a small, naked, circular single-stranded RNA molecule that lacks a protein coat, yet it is highly infectious and persists within the vascular tissues of its host plants.
The primary host is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), although the disease can also affect other palm species, such as oil palms and fan palms. The term "cadang-cadang" means "dying" in the local Bicol language of the Philippines, where the disease was first identified. The pathogen exerts its effect by disrupting host cellular processes, leading to physiological decay and eventually the death of the entire tree.
The transmission of the viroid occurs primarily through mechanical vectors, such as contaminated tools (pruning shears, harvesting knives) used on infected trees and then on healthy ones. There is also evidence suggesting that the viroid can be transmitted through pollen and seeds. Because the viroid does not require a specific insect vector, it can spread silently across plantations over many years before initial symptoms become obvious.
The biological cycle of the disease is exceptionally slow. The incubation period often lasts from two to four years, during which time the host remains asymptomatic while the pathogen multiplies. As the viroid spreads systemically, it interferes with the plant’s nutrient transport system. This leads to the characteristic progression from mild leaf chlorosis to complete cessation of fruit production and eventual crown failure.

- Progressive reduction in the size of the palm crown.
- Death of the tree within 8 to 16 years of initial infection.
Management of Coconut cadang-cadang is strictly based on sanitation and quarantine because no cure exists. Controlling the spread involves the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic trees, often including the destruction of neighboring palms that may be latent carriers. Strict disinfection of harvesting tools and prohibiting the movement of planting material from infected areas are the only reliable strategies to prevent the pathogen from devastating new regions.
