Calloria disease is a fungal infection caused by members of the genus Calloria, primarily affecting various woody plants and shrubs. As an ascomycete fungus, it manifests as a necrotic disease that targets the bark and cambium layers of the host, eventually disrupting essential transport vessels within the plant stems.

The pathogen is typically opportunistic, finding entry into the host plant through wounds, frost cracks, or sites of insect damage. Once inside, the fungal mycelium colonizes the living tissues, leading to the gradual breakdown of the vascular system and, in severe cases, the death of the entire branch or limb.

Visible symptoms often include sunken, discolored patches on the bark which may eventually crack. During humid conditions, the fungus produces distinctive cup-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which emerge from the necrotic tissue. These structures are the primary source of spore dispersal for further infection.

The development and spread of Calloria are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and mild temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splash. Poor airflow within dense plantings or shaded areas significantly increases the risk of infection and the speed at which the fungus spreads through the orchard or forest.

Effective management and prevention of the disease require a comprehensive agricultural approach:

  • Regular sanitation, including the pruning and removal of all infected plant material.
  • Applying protective wound dressings to pruning cuts to prevent pathogen entry.
  • Maintaining plant vigor through appropriate fertilization and water management.
  • The use of preventive fungicides during periods of high humidity to protect vulnerable tissues.

By compromising the structural and functional integrity of the stems, the fungus limits the plant's ability to thrive.
