Description
Calosphaeria princeps is a pathogenic fungus recognized as a significant agent causing wood-decay diseases in grapevines. As an ascomycete, it colonizes the vascular tissues of perennial wood, leading to progressive degradation of the vine's structure and its ability to transport nutrients and water effectively.
The primary host for this pathogen is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). It is frequently identified in mature vineyard blocks where extensive pruning wounds and mechanical damage provide easy entry points for fungal spores. While it is primarily a viticultural threat, it can also manifest in various woody landscape plants under specific environmental conditions.
Symptoms of an infection include the gradual dieback of canes or entire cordons, reduced vigor, and poor seasonal growth. When the affected wood is cross-sectioned, characteristic necrosis is observed, often displaying dark, wedge-shaped stains within the xylem. In severe cases, the affected part of the vine may suddenly wilt and die during the peak of the growing season.
Development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on climatic conditions, specifically high humidity and precipitation levels. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing water, landing on fresh wounds created during maintenance activities. The fungus thrives in moist environments, which are conducive to spore germination and the initial establishment of mycelium in the vine's internal tissues.
Effective management requires a proactive approach to sanitation and wounding prevention. Key strategies include:
- Scheduling pruning operations during dry weather to ensure rapid wound desiccation.
- Systematic disinfection of pruning tools between vines to prevent cross-contamination.
- Application of specialized wound-sealing pastes or fungicides immediately after large cuts.
- Removal and destruction of highly symptomatic vine parts to reduce the localized inoculum density.
