Candidiasis in plants is a fungal condition induced by yeast-like fungi of the Candida genus. While commonly recognized in human pathology, these organisms act as opportunistic plant pathogens, colonizing various host tissues that are already weakened by environmental stress, insect damage, or mechanical injuries.

The pathogen consists of unicellular fungi that thrive by forming pseudomycelium. These fungi are particularly problematic in post-harvest conditions, as they are capable of rapid proliferation on the surface of harvested fruits and vegetables, causing rapid physiological breakdown and tissue decay within storage environments.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to this infection, including strawberries, grapes, peaches, and various solanaceous vegetables. The fungus typically invades the fruit through micro-lesions in the cuticle, using the nutrient-rich sap to support its rapid growth cycle and metabolic activity.

Symptoms often manifest as soft, water-soaked spots covered with a creamy white or yellowish fungal layer. As the infection progresses, the tissues lose their structural integrity, becoming pulpy. A distinct fermented or yeast-like odor is a clinical sign of active Candida colonization in decaying plant material.

Management strategies focus on minimizing host vulnerability and environmental suitability for the pathogen. Essential steps include improving air circulation in storage facilities, careful handling to prevent bruising, and employing sanitation protocols to eliminate inoculum sources. Regular field scouting and timely control of insect pests significantly reduce the risk of secondary infections.
