Description
Carnation etched ring is a viral disease caused by the Carnation etched ring virus (CERV), a member of the Caulimovirus genus. This plant pathogen is characterized by its ability to spread throughout the host system, significantly impacting the structural and physiological integrity of ornamental plants.
The primary host for this virus is the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus). Because the virus is systemic, it inhabits the plant's vascular tissues, leading to chronic infections that persist throughout the life of the plant and reduce its economic and aesthetic value in the cut flower industry.
Symptoms of the infection manifest primarily on the foliage. Growers often observe chlorotic spots, light-colored streaks, or distinct ring-shaped patterns that resemble an etched engraving on the leaves. In more severe cases, the foliage becomes distorted, and the overall plant vigor decreases, leading to smaller, lower-quality blossoms.
The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical means, such as the use of contaminated pruning tools, contact during cultivation activities, or the propagation of infected cuttings. Since infected mother plants rarely show immediate symptoms, the virus is easily spread across a greenhouse facility unknowingly through vegetative propagation.
Effective management requires a strict sanitation strategy. Since there is no chemical cure for viral infections, producers must rely on preventative measures, including the use of virus-indexed stock produced through meristem culture, strict hygiene protocols for tools and staff, and the prompt removal and disposal of any plants exhibiting suspicious symptoms.
