Carnation etched ring virus (CERV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Cavemovirus in the family Caulimoviridae. As a DNA-containing virus, it specifically targets plants within the Caryophyllaceae family, representing a significant concern for commercial carnation producers worldwide.
The disease is characterized by distinct chlorotic spots, rings, and etched patterns on the foliage of affected plants. In severe cases, systemic infection leads to stunted plant growth, reduced flower production, and reduced overall plant vigor, which directly impacts the commercial value of ornamental crops.
The biological cycle of CERV is highly dependent on insect vectors, primarily aphids such as Myzus persicae. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner, meaning that aphids can acquire the virus from an infected plant after a brief feeding period and transmit it to healthy plants shortly thereafter.
Spread of the pathogen is facilitated by environmental factors that favor aphid population explosions, such as moderate temperatures and dense planting in greenhouses. Additionally, the virus can be transmitted mechanically through the use of shared gardening tools if they are not properly sanitized between plants.
Control strategies focus primarily on exclusion and sanitation. Growers should prioritize the use of virus-free nursery stock, often derived through meristem culture techniques. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs must be strictly implemented to suppress aphid populations, combined with rigorous culling of symptomatic plants to reduce the local inoculum source.
