Pathogen and Disease Type. Cauliflower mosaic (CaMV) is a viral disease caused by the Cauliflower mosaic virus, which belongs to the Caulimoviridae family. It specifically targets members of the Brassicaceae family. Unlike some other plant diseases, it is not seed-borne, meaning it relies entirely on transmission via insect vectors or physical contact with contaminated tools, making vector control essential for management.
Susceptible Crops. The virus is a significant threat to various brassicas, including cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage. In agricultural systems, it causes substantial damage to winter rapeseed and radish. Additionally, wild cruciferous weeds act as persistent environmental reservoirs, maintaining the virus in the field throughout the year, even in the absence of primary crops.
Symptoms and Signs. The primary indicator is mosaic leaf patterning, characterized by chlorotic patches or vein clearing. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, or systemic deformation. In mature plants, the virus disrupts physiological processes, preventing proper head formation in cauliflower or reducing the overall vigor and yield quality of oilseed rape and radish crops.
Development and Spread. The virus is primarily transmitted by aphids in a non-persistent manner. When aphids feed on an infected plant, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants during their next feeding bout. Warm and dry weather conditions exacerbate the situation by accelerating aphid multiplication, which significantly increases the rate of viral spread across the plantation.
Damage and Protection. The economic impact is severe, often resulting in significant yield losses and lower product quality. Effective management strategies involve:
- Eliminating cruciferous weeds that serve as virus reservoirs.
- Applying insecticides to maintain aphid populations below the economic injury level.
- Maintaining spatial separation between older and younger crops.
- Implementing crop rotation and using resistant cultivars where available to reduce susceptibility.
