Description

Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Caulimovirus within the family Caulimoviridae. This pararetrovirus contains double-stranded DNA and is known to affect a wide range of host plants, primarily within the Brassicaceae family, causing serious damage to commercial crops like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and oilseed rape.

Infected plants typically exhibit mosaic patterns on foliage, vein clearing, and leaf distortion. These symptoms significantly inhibit the physiological functions of the plant, leading to stunted growth and reduced crop yields. In severe cases, the development of cabbage heads or inflorescences is completely disrupted, rendering the produce unmarketable.

The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent, semi-persistent manner primarily by aphid species, such as the cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae). The virus particles are picked up by the aphid's mouthparts during probing and are quickly transmitted to subsequent healthy plants. This mechanism allows the virus to spread rapidly through a field even with low insect populations.

The disease development is heavily influenced by the availability of weed hosts such as wild mustard and shepherd's purse, which serve as reservoirs for the virus during the off-season. Temperature and humidity play a critical role in the population dynamics of aphid vectors, determining the potential spread and severity of the mosaic outbreak in a given season.

  • Maintaining field hygiene and removing infected crop residues.

Management of CaMV relies heavily on preventative measures because once a plant is infected, there are no curative treatments. Controlling the vector population through scheduled insecticide applications and limiting the proximity to weed reservoirs are the most effective strategies to prevent the introduction and spread of the virus within vegetable plots.
