The Cephaloascaceae family belongs to the Ascomycota phylum and includes several fungi that act as opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. These organisms are known for their ability to thrive on various plant materials, often compromising the health of the host and reducing the overall quality of agricultural commodities during the pre-harvest and post-harvest stages.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to these fungi, particularly cereals, oilseeds, and various fruits. The disease typically manifests when plants are under environmental stress, or when harvested materials are subjected to improper storage conditions. The presence of these fungi can lead to significant economic losses in both food security and industrial agricultural output.
Symptoms of Cephaloascaceae infection often include the development of mycelial mats, discoloration of affected tissues, and progressive degradation of the plant structure. In stored grains, the infection may result in heating, clumping, and the production of metabolites that are detrimental to livestock if the contaminated crop is used for feed.
