Cephalosporium stripe is a significant vascular disease of cereals caused by the fungus Cephalosporium balanoides. This pathogen colonizes the xylem of the host plant, effectively restricting the uptake of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the wilting and decline of the crop.

Common cereal crops such as winter wheat, barley, and rye are the primary hosts for this fungus. The disease is particularly problematic in regions with temperate climates where continuous cereal cropping is practiced, allowing the pathogen to build up its population in the soil.

The characteristic symptoms typically appear during the late vegetative stages. The most notable sign is the development of long, yellow, necrotic stripes along the leaf veins, extending down the leaf sheath. Infected plants often show stunted growth and may produce empty or poorly filled heads, leading to severe yield losses.

The spread of Cephalosporium balanoides is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. The fungus enters the plant through the root system, often aided by injury caused by freeze-thaw cycles or the feeding of soil-borne pests, which compromise the plant's natural defenses.
