Description
Cephalosporium stripe, caused by the fungus Hymenula cerealis (syn. Cephalosporium gramineum), is a devastating soil-borne vascular disease. The pathogen colonizes the xylem of the host plant, effectively blocking the transport of water and nutrients, which leads to the characteristic symptoms of wilting and necrosis.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are winter-sown cereals, including winter wheat, winter rye, and winter barley. The fungus persists in infested crop residues left in the soil, making it a recurring threat in fields where monoculture or short-term crop rotation is practiced.
Symptoms typically become evident in the spring as plants begin to grow rapidly. The most diagnostic sign is the appearance of yellow, linear stripes on the leaves that follow the veins. As the disease progresses, these stripes turn brownish, the stems may show internal discoloration, and the plants often produce shriveled, light-weight grains.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions. It thrives in cool, wet soil conditions, especially when there are fluctuations in temperature that lead to frost heaving and minor root damage. These wounds provide the entry points for the fungus to invade the plant's vascular system efficiently.
Management of Cephalosporium stripe relies heavily on cultural practices, as chemical control is generally ineffective. The most effective strategies include implementing a minimum 2-to-3-year rotation with non-host crops to allow the fungal inoculum to decline, ensuring proper field drainage, using resistant cultivars, and promoting rapid decomposition of crop residues through tillage management.
