The Cephalothecaceae family is a specialized group of ascomycete fungi that are increasingly recognized in agricultural settings for their role in post-harvest decay and opportunistic infection of plant tissues. A key representative of this family, Cephalotheca sulfurea, is often found acting as a saprotroph, though it can become a significant pathogen under favorable environmental conditions.
These fungi primarily affect various agricultural commodities, including vegetables, soft fruits, and cereal grains. The infection process is often facilitated by pre-existing physiological damage to the host, such as bruising, cracks from harvesting, or weakness caused by non-optimal storage conditions, which serve as entry points for the fungal mycelium.
Symptoms of Cephalothecaceae infection are characterized by the development of localized spots on the plant surface, eventually covered by a fine, dusty mycelial mat. This growth is often yellow or grayish in appearance.
