The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Ceratocystis pirilliformis. It is a specialized pathogen responsible for severe vascular mycoses and internal wood decay. This type of disease fundamentally disrupts the tree's internal transport system, ultimately leading to systemic decline and the potential death of the host plant.

The disease primarily affects fruit-bearing trees and certain ornamental species. The pathogen exploits structural weaknesses in the host, entering the plant through wounds, pruning cuts, or insect-caused bark damage. Once established, the fungus colonizes the xylem, consuming structural carbohydrates and compromising the mechanical integrity of the wood.

Visible symptoms often include canopy wilting, foliage discoloration, and localized bark lesions. Internally, the wood displays characteristic staining, often appearing as dark streaks or mottled patches indicating fungal infiltration.
