Cercomonads (family Cercomonadidae) are flagellated protozoa that occupy the rhizosphere of various plants. In agronomic practice, they are often identified as components of the soil microbiome that, under specific environmental stressors, can adversely affect root health and plant vigor.

These organisms are single-celled flagellates that exhibit both flagellar and amoeboid movement. They act as opportunistic pathogens that interact with the root surface. By colonizing the rhizosphere, they exploit the nutrient-rich exudates provided by the plant, which often disrupts the symbiotic relationship between roots and beneficial fungi or bacteria.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to their impact, including cereals, legumes, and various horticultural plants. Seedlings are particularly vulnerable, as these organisms target the delicate root hair zones. Symptoms include reduced seedling vigor, chlorotic foliage, stunted growth, and visible brown lesions on the root cortex, which can lead to seedling damping-off.

The proliferation of Cercomonadidae is strictly linked to environmental conditions. High soil moisture, poor drainage, and the presence of abundant decomposing organic matter provide the ideal habitat for their growth. They spread efficiently through contaminated irrigation water and the movement of soil particles via field equipment during cultivation processes.

The economic impact of these protozoa is significant, as they weaken the plant and render it more susceptible to secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens. Preventive strategies include maintaining optimal soil aeration and drainage, practicing crop rotation to limit build-up in the soil, and applying beneficial microbial inoculants. Monitoring the root health of young crops is essential for early detection and mitigation of potential losses.
