Description
The fungus Cercospora citrullina is the primary pathogen responsible for Cercospora leaf spot in cucurbitaceous crops. This disease commonly infects watermelons, melons, cucumbers, and squashes. It is a significant concern for agricultural producers worldwide, as it affects the foliage and can severely limit the photosynthetic potential of the crop during the peak growing season.
Symptoms typically begin on older leaves as small, circular, or irregular spots that are tan to brown in color with a darker, distinct margin. As the lesion progresses, the centers of the spots may become brittle and tear. Under conditions of high relative humidity, a greyish-olive powdery coating, consisting of the fungus's conidia, is clearly visible on the underside of the leaves.
The development of Cercospora citrullina is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. The pathogen overwinters on crop debris in the soil, making field sanitation a critical factor in disease management. Conidia are disseminated through the field via wind, splashing rain, or overhead irrigation, allowing the disease to spread rapidly through a crop canopy.

When the foliage is destroyed, the plant lacks the energy required to properly develop fruits, leading to reduced yields, smaller fruit size, and poor quality. Severely infected fields show a rapid decline in plant health, making them more susceptible to opportunistic pathogens and reducing overall profit margins.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate the buildup of fungal inoculum. Key prevention strategies include:

- Thorough plowing and burying of crop residues to accelerate decomposition.
